How to Celebrate the Moms in Your Life – Mother’s Day in a Pandemic

Mother’s Day 2021 may look a little different this year.

While the easing of COVID-19 restrictions will make it much easier for us to spend quality time with the ladies in our lives, the same cannot be said for some. Many of our fellow Singaporeans who are working or studying overseas will not have the chance to celebrate in-person with their loved ones.

The global pandemic has taught us the importance of family and forced us to rethink our priorities. With social distancing measures still in place, it’s helpful to remember that physical distancing does not equal emotional distancing! We’re reminded that it’s essential, now more than ever, to stay connected and check up on our family members.

Fast approaching Sunday, 9th May, Singapore celebrates Mother’s Day – so what better opportunity is there to tell your mother, grandmother or wife just how much they mean to you?

Maybe, like some of us, you’re spending the holiday thousands of kilometers away. If so, let’s figure out how to make the special women in your life feel appreciated.

Seize the chance to get creative

When you can’t physically be present with the mother figures you want to celebrate, video-conferencing apps like Zoom, Skype, and Houseparty can help you prove you care in unique ways. Now is a wonderful time to get creative with what you should do for your mom on her special day.

Have an online tea party: Treat yourselves to a chat over some of her favourite delicacies and fine bakes while sipping tea (or champagne, if that’s more your taste). If you’re not sure where you can get those sweet treats, feel free to browse from our collection of teas and cookies!

Share a virtual cooking class: Passing down family traditions is vital, wouldn’t you agree? Ask Mom how to cook a favourite family recipe. Get the ingredients list in advance and then schedule a time to make the dish together.

Watch a film: As long as everyone can agree on the same film, movie night (or movie day, depending on international time differences) is a great way to get together. The Netflix Party (now Teleparty) app is perfect for synchronising video playback, so long-distance watch parties are still in session!

Keep delivery delays in mind

Not all mothers have video-chat apps, and not all mothers are interested in learning about new technology. If your special lady has been doing a lot of video conferencing for work, she may also appreciate a more traditional gift.

In this case, sending a gift is the more logical choice! Just make sure to check with your delivery service provider on whether it’ll arrive on time. We conveniently display the earliest delivery date and time on our homepage, so you know exactly when to place your order – and if you have additional enquiries, we’re happy to answer them through Whatsapp [insert link here]!

Shop local: Order a feast, some baked goods, or a gift basket from a nearby place. Look up your favourite local or small business online – they may still be accepting orders on GrabFood, Foodpanda or Deliveroo. Don’t forget to contact them ahead of time to see if they have any special delivery or timing requirements specific to the Mother’s Day weekend. Supporting a local business this way will help the community where she lives.

Gift flowers: Hand bouquets are sure to put a smile on her face, especially if she loves brightening up her space with fresh blooms. Check out our intricately crafted bouquets or head over to our sister site at Simply Blooms for our bloom boxes!

Write a letter: If spending money isn’t an option and your family isn’t equipped with the tools to spend time together online, there are still ways to express your love and gratitude. Sit down, think about the memories you’ve shared together and put pen to paper. Trust us – a handwritten letter received in the post will mean so much more to her than an email or text!

Most importantly, share the love

The pandemic may have forced us to readjust our plans. But rather than letting it discourage us, we all have an opportunity to make holidays and family occasions more memorable, and perhaps even more unique, than in previous years. Remember that mothers will appreciate every gesture, because it is the thought that counts!

This Mother’s Day, let’s be intentional about how we celebrate our mothers despite the circumstances that may keep us apart. She’s always found ways to be there for you no matter the situation – now it’s your turn to do the same.
