Every 8th of March, we celebrate women’s achievements all around the world and reinforce our endeavors in forging women’s equality. But in devoting our myriad efforts to strive for a world free of bias, stereotypes & discrimination, all too often we forget to reflect on our own well-being. 

So on this 111th International Women’s Day, take a breather, relax, and focus on the health & wellness of not only yourself, but for your loved ones as well.

Prioritizing Sleep

It goes without saying that good-quality sleep is just as important as eating a well-balanced diet and exercising habitually. While it may be tempting to ardently throw yourself fully into your work especially in this day and age, it is vital to ensure that your body gets the rest it needs on the daily. 

A good night’s rest keeps your immune system healthy and running at it’s best, as well as maintaining optimum metabolism and hormone levels. It also improves your concentration, cognition, overall performance which in turn translates to increased productivity. 

With that being said,  keep away from your digital devices 30 minutes before heading to bed as the blue light from the screens can cause your circadian rhythm to go haywire. Also, avoid eating large meals or drinking caffeinated beverages close to bedtime. 

Before slipping under the sheets, take a warm bath, keep your bedroom at a comfortable temperature, turn on some relaxing music, or even light some oil diffusers to fill the air with some soothing & pleasant aroma. Do whatever you can to ensure you get that well-deserved beauty sleep!

When you think healthy, you think exercise. It is naturally the go-to regime when anyone wants to keep themselves fit and in shape. Exercising undeniably promotes stronger cardiovascular, digestive and immune systems. But there’s more to exercising than just the aspects of physique. 

Working out pumps up your endorphins and boosts your overall mood and energy levels so you’ll feel more lively throughout the day. It’s also a great stress reliever and is often coined as “meditation in motion”. The stresses and worries of the day melt away as you concentrate on your body’s movement when carrying out vigorous and fast-paced activities like swimming, jogging, or an intense game of tennis or racquetball.

So start planning and developing your very own fitness routine and get into the habit of exercising today!

Cutting out saturated and industrially-produced trans-fats, and consuming less sugar and salt in your daily meals will significantly reduce the risk of cardiovascular diseases and prevent high-blood pressure. 

Fruits, vegetables, and oats are highly nutritious and rich with antioxidants, fibers, and a combination of minerals and vitamins. Be sure not to skip out on meat, fish, eggs, and milk as they are packed with protein and calcium to keep you strong and fit as well. 

With a combination of healthy foods, we can say with confidence that you’ll be well protected against various chronic non-communicable diseases. After all, we are what we eat! 

Take A Mental Health Day

Taking a mental health day to rest and relax

Taking time off from work and just wanting to sit on the sofa and relax doesn’t make you a couch potato. Without taking an occasional break, you’ll start to burn out quicker and your productivity dwindles as you feel overloaded and overwhelmed. 

Learn to relax every once in a while. There’s no shame in wanting to step away from the physical and mental demands of everyday life. Sit back and watch some TV, have a sip of wine with some light & mellow music on, or just stay in bed with a warm cup of coffee and a good book in hand. Whatever it is, you’ll find yourself going back to work with a refreshed and clear mind.
